The Minister, who was officiating at the Human Resources Development Council (HRDC) career and skills clinic, cited the bad behaviour among tertiary education learners as the main reason why they do not complete their studies.

The majority of those who do not complete their studies fail due to ill discipline and lack of focus, according to Molao.

The Minister urged tertiary students to desist from their bad behaviour and strive for excellence in their education.

He said the students should remember that failure to complete their studies has financial implications on the Government. “Failure to complete studies by some learners also means that the economy loses out on potential skills and knowledgeable workers,” he said.

He added that students who drop out also lead to millions of pulas belonging to Government going to waste.

Molao told Mmegi that his Ministry has registered over 3,000 students from different tertiary institutions who have failed but want to be reinstated and sponsored by the Government in order to complete their studies.

According to him some of the students are denied re-sponsorship because of limited funding from the Ministry, leaving them with no choice but to stay home, which exposes them to dangerous activities such as crime.

He further said if many students were to be sponsored again, it would also affect the intake and sponsorship of new students.

“The average amount used to sponsor each tertiary student is close to P50,000 per annum which is a very significant cost,” he highlighted.

Molao added that some of the negative outcomes of tertiary learners who fail to complete their studies include failure to repay their student loans.
