Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Fidelis Molao said this during the official opening of the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) skills fair and career clinics held in the second city. Molao added that as part of their research, students should introspect, reflect and consult with their parents, career influencers and interact with experts in their envisaged professional fields.

“These experts and other stakeholders you will consult, will share with you experiences in their respective professional areas, the pre-requisite thereof, as well as their personal and professional experiences.”

“It is only after you have had such information that you can prudently choose your programme of study,” he advised.

Molao further urged the learners to utilise career clinics, which will help prevent them from making wrong career choices, which have long-term implications.

“Wrong career choices have negative implications for self-fulfillment and self-actualisation of an individual,” said Molao. Molao highlighted that in some instances, students do not complete their tertiary education because they chose the wrong courses.

In addition, he urged learners to be mindful of their passion, academic performance and what the labour market wants when they choose careers. “A balance between these three cannot be over emphasised particularly in an era where the Government is gravitating towards industry-led training and knowledge-based economy, in a bid to diversify the country’s economy,” the Minister said.

It was the first time the annual HRDC career fair has been held outside Gaborone since it debuted seven years ago. The HRDC has indicated that it intends to take the event to other areas in the future.
