Athletics is facing a dilemma after three top officials quit

The president, Moses Bantsi, his vice Ronald Masalila and secretary general, Kebaitse Legojane quit in a huff at the association’s annual general meeting on Saturday.

The remaining executive members are having sleepless nights as they are trying to find ways to fill the vacant positions. BAA treasurer, Brian Mosweu told Mmegi Sport yesterday that their constitution is silent on what should be done in such instances. He said the committee met yesterday to map way forward.

“It is not easy to co-opt people into positions that are above us. This issue has lot of legalities that we must deal with. We intend to take the matter to Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) and Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) for guidance. We would also engage our clubs,” he said.

The remaining committee members are Mosweu, Olebogeng Oitebetse (vice secretary general), Charles Keikotlhae (public relations officer), Moses Raphutse (additional member-north) and Mompati Ngwako (additional member-south).

Mosweu said the other difficulty is that they do not know if the remaining committee should stay in office or it should be dismantled.

A representative of Orapa athletics club, who preferred anonymity, said while the motion was targeting the secretary general, they, as affiliates, were shocked by Bantsi and Masalila’s resignations.

“We do not know why they resigned because they did not give reasons. We are waiting for them to submit resignation letters stating their reasons. As a club we are yet to meet to discuss the matter,” he said. Meanwhile, the BAA was last year dragged to court challenging the legitimacy of the 2015 elective annual general meeting (AGM).

Orapa and New Vision were questioning the legality of the BAA executive committee. Mosweu said the executive committee met with the two affiliates last year over the issue. He said the meeting resolution was that the matter should be withdrawn from the court.
