Speaking at the Earth Life Africa second Annual Pool tournament live draw, the President of Botswana Billiards Confederation (BBC) Terence Tiroyakgosi said his association has done a tremendous job in developing officials.

He said the BBC has produced referees and coaches who are on Level One. Tiroyakgosi said the officials are recognised and accredited by All African Pool Association body.

“Our affiliation to Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) was renewed last year. At the moment, BBC has four members and registration is still open for new members.”

Tiroyakgosi said they would continue to engage with stakeholders in promoting and developing the code with the future looking bright.

“It is very tough to execute a project of this magnitude without sponsorship, and as a confederation we have serious financial challenges because we cannot rely on government alone for a grant but I am grateful Earth Life Africa has assisted us up to this stage,” he said.

Tiroyakgosi also encouraged women and other men to take part in this sport as it helps build focus, sharpens the mind, enables stretching and balance. It is also a sport for all ages therefore people are encouraged to take part in pool game, he said.

“This tournament has been going through some challenges. It is not easy to find sponsors for the pool game,” Tiroyakgosi said. The players are divided into two groups, the 32 players have been split into half, with the winner in each group going to the final in April. The tournament is only open to Batswana. The first edition of the tournament was won by a South African, who pocketed P50,000. The organisers are yet to decide on the prize money for the players who finish second and third.
