Katlego Twala: The New Face Of Art

Twala is more than just a pretty face but rather a vigorous artist whose paintings simply come to life just by looking at them.

The 18-year-old beauty however says painting was never part of her plans. In fact, “art was only a part of my curriculum at school and now it only seems funny that what started off as an accident became my centre”.

It was only after completing her senior school that she decided to try other techniques which helped shape the amazing artist she has become.

Elaborating further on why she relentlessly pursues a life in art, Katlego cited how it helps her as an evolving character, to express herself in the utmost way, where words fall short.

Like a tree by the riverside, such talent grows when watered and nurtured properly and Katlego’s mother, who is also her manager, makes sure she gets all the necessary support she needs to grow.

The excitement and pride in her daughter’s work could be seen from a mile away at the recently held expo at Basilico restaurant in which Katlego’s work was displayed and successfully auctioned. There is no exact inspiration behind her work.

“It could be a moment, a situation or place that inspires me to draw,” she explains.  Her driving force however is the level of inspiration induced on her by her two favourites; Oprah Winfrey and Connie Ferguson, two black women who started from nothing but made the best of themselves.

“I believe that art breaks all boundaries set by society. We are all different and express ourselves differently and so by working hard and pushing myself I strike to change Batswana’s perceptions towards art,” emphasises Twala. She hopes other young people follow her lead and chase after their dreams because, ‘at the moment’, diversity is a goldmine.
