Gunners, Miscellaneous miss out on BTC Cup

Miscellaneous shook the local football fraternity when they topped the charts with just over 8, 000 votes a fortnight ago while Gunners were second with 2, 000 less. However, the race heated up in the last week with Orapa United climbing the charts to  second spot on Friday as they had 16, 386 votes while missing from the top four were Gaborone United (GU) and Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

On Monday morning when they results were announced at the Lekidi football grounds, it was revealed that Orapa United were top led with 37 472, Township Rollers in second with 36 309 votes. GU and Chiefs managed to squeeze in to the four as they occupiedthe third and last spots with 34, 979 and 31 402 votes respectively.

GU will face Chiefs in the first semi final of the one day tournament while Rollers and the Ostriches will battle it out in the second semi final. Reacting to the draw, Chiefs' public relations officer, Clifford Mogomotsi was happy that his side managed to be part of the tournament, as the financial benefit will come in handy for his cash strapped side.

'I would like to thank all Magosi for voting their team. We are happy to be part of the cup, we have always targeted the fourth spot, and bearing in my mind our own pocket, so we are happy that we got it.'

'We looking forward to face GU, I think it is the only team here, looking at the preseason, we can match. Then we will see what happens in the final,' he said.

For his part, Rollers' Bafana Pheto criticised the voting system while sending warning shots to Orapa United. 'It was a difficult mountain to climb. I think it was not fair. They could have used the top four teams (in the league). But going in to the game, they (Orapa) should remember the cup final in Francistown (where Rollers won 3-1). This is going to be a repeat of that final,' he said.

The winner of the tournament will walk away with P300, 000; runners up with P200, 000 while the semifinalists will pocket P120, 000. All proceeds of the tournament will be donated to charity organizations of Botswana Premier League and BTCL's choice.
