At the launch of Francisco Kgoboko Trust this morning Khama narrated how Kgathi tried to force him to cancel his acceptance to officiate at the event.

Kgoboko is challenging Kgathi in the Bulela Ditswe.

Khama, who spoke at length against Kgathi, said he was shocked to hear the minister ordering him to cancel his participation at the launch.

“Ke ratile go wa mo setilong… abo a nthaa a re: ‘mme ke kopa gore, you should cancel, oseka a teng’,.. ke be e botsa gore mopalemente e motho etseng jang,” narrated Khama with his amusing broken Setswana to the applauding audience.

Khama went on to label Kgathi power hungry and disrespectful to him as Bangwato Kgosikgolo.

He said he also got a call that Kgathi is blocking Dikgosi from attending the launch adding. “Goo moo ke lenyatso, kana ke Kgosikgolo” (It’s disrespectful, because I am the King),” the former president said.

Khama continued with his sharp jibes at Kgathi saying that a constituency is not a personal property as it is open to contest.

The former president said throughout all of his travels in Botswana he was never shunned by a seating MP. Khama ended the Kgathi sparring with an appeal to the audience that they must sort out their MP.

“Ke beile mo go lona gore le baakanye, akere,” said Khama to the loud cheers from the crowd.

The Kgathi spat seem to be the latest Khama’s high level confrontation with BDP colleagues under President Mokgweetsi Masisi administration. Kgathi, was during Khama’s reign among his confidantes. The former president seemed to trust the Bobonong MP that he entrusted him, among others, with the key ministry of Justice, Defence and Security. It remains to be seen how much damage Khama has caused on Kgathi’s bid to return to Parliament under BDP ticket.
