During an interview with the pageant director Zenzel Hirschfeld yesterday, said the beauty pageant was a women empowerment programme that was established in 2008 by Millennium Jazz patrons.

“Even though it was established for fun, we later decided to make it a pageant with purpose. Its primary objective is to support the vision that Botswana has as a country of being a compassionate, just and caring nation towards and beyond 2016. It is an annual event that targets women of 40 years and above,” she said.

Hirschfeld added Millennium Jazz Restaurant has been and is still home to the renowned social responsibility event. She explained that the previous and current Savanna Dry Miss Millennium beauty queens had made a difference in residents of Mogoditshane and neighbouring villages.

“Former beauty queens have successfully hosted underprivileged children and the elderly people of Mogoditshane and Moshaneng village in Southern district. They also launched a charity football tournament and had also included wellness empowering and education activities,” she said.

She added that as the pageant grows, they intend to make the charity initiatives to be national. She said throughout its existence, the theme for Miss Millennium had been ‘Real beauty is from within’.

The former queens who have touched lives is Miss Millennium 2010 Theresa Hirschfeld who in 2010 went to Moshaneng where she found a home with numerous orphans and their grandmother. She was able to rescue the family from abject poverty and put a smile on their faces. She also gave hope to the underprivileged children and senior citizens in Selibe Phikwe.

Another former queen Penana Motlhabi was able to assist some orphans in Mmanoko get proper accommodation after they were kicked out of their maternal home by relatives. Motlhabi was able to rescue the situation by renting them a house and through her determination and hard work went further, raising some money to build them a house after securing a plot in Mmanoko. They would soon be handed the house.

Nomina, a Motswana artiste based in German would be treating the audience with her fabulous music on Friday. The reigning queen and former queens would also give a special tribute to the late Miss Millennium 2013, Mitchel Tianje.

Entrance fee will be P100 single and P175 for double ticket. The pageant will start at 6pm at Millennium Jazz Resturant.
