District No. 4 commander, senior superintendent Alakanani Makobo said the Lobatse-Gaborone road was closed following a bridge collapse near Nnywane Dam.

He advised motorists to use the Mogobane-Kanye-Molapowabojang road to reach Lobatse and similarly with those who will be heading from Lobatse to Gaborone.

“We have a problem with the Moshupa-Kanye roads and Lobatse-Gaborone road. A bridge has collapsed near the Nnywane Dam and we advise members of the public to use the Mogobane-Kanye-Molapowabojang road to reach Lobatse. Similarly with those who will be heading from Lobatse to Gaborone,” he said.

Makobo said motorists have to cooperate since it may be time to repair the bridge.

Several passengers were rescued from a bus after it veered off the road in Maisane yesterday. They were rushed to the Seventh Adventist hospital in Kanye where they were screened and released.

Meanwhile students in some Lobatse schools were yesterday returned home after schools were closed following the heavy downpours.

One student, Olebogeng Molema said they were not informed that schools will be closed until Monday hence they came to school yesterday.

The office of the district commissioner in Lobatse yesterday took the decision to close the schools until Monday amid heavy downpours in the southern district.

Makobo said damages caused by yesterday’s heavy rainfall were within control. He said at least a few houses in Peleng, Thema and Motswedi wards were affected by the floods.

The Lobatse district commissioner yesterday said that community halls were on standby to accommodate all the victims of the floods.
