1.With this communiqué, the BNFYL wishes to not only retract the ‘opinion’ that it demands 23 Constituencies but also distance itself from such an unfortunate utterance. We will deal with the issue internally.

2.For record, the BNFYL fully support the UDC as it is and we have never hidden our unwavering support for the said national project as a collective. It was greatly unfortunate that a misleading and potentially dangerous utterance was made to the media, therefore to the public by one of us in a press conference.

Errors are expected in human life and indeed political life but collectively, we take blame and full responsibility. That is how leadership is done.

3.We wish to reaffirm that the BNFYL is a disciplined force and ever since we assumed office we have demonstrated it not through word of mouth but practically.

We are alive to and subscribe to the ethos, ethics and etiquette of a revolutionary movement. We have set a new record of organizational discipline and we will still maintain it. We are cognizant of the fact that the BNFYL operate under the control and direction of the Motherbody as dictated by Section 44.2.4 which enact the Youth League: “The Youth league shall be under the direction and control of the BNF and shall follow the policy and programme of the BNF”. We are fully aware and need not to be lectured that discipline is paramount in a revolution.

We are also conversant of the processes and procedures of raising a concern and that we can do that internally. We are also conversant of the concept of ‘delegated power’, in that BNF (and therefore the youth league) was represented in the negotiations and as such it will be unreasonable and absolute absurdity for us, and indeed anyone to behave otherwise.

Since the BNFYL have never raised any query internally, it can’t raise any query externally. We apologize on behalf on the youth league and our cadre. We have earned our reputation and respect in the Botswana politics recently as a true vanguard of the people’s revolution and aspirations and we wish to continue with the impeccable record.

4.Lastly, this is an opportune time to warn UDC members and its contracting parties to behave themselves and learn to exercise restraint always. There is a growing and annoying tendency of comrades who are trigger-happy. Whenever there is an issue, such warmongers are always gun blazing and many a times with undue recklessness. Be cautioned! The BNFYL has remained quiet even when its Mother body leadership was under attack even from some known activists and structures. We have remained quiet not because we don’t have ‘a mouth to speak’, but because we want to demonstrate maturity and commitment to the UDC. We have exercised serious restraint, not because we are cowards but because we realize that a lot is at stake, we realize that Umbrella is not a competition of who attacks more than another. We realize that there is no ‘trophy’ for being trigger-happy.

This is a national project and everyone must exercise restraint no matter how excited they are. It would appear we trap one another as individual parties, so that we trip one another whenever an issue arises.

BNF is blessed with serious warlords and experienced people who can really fight if they want to. But we congratulate them for exercising the necessary restraint. Can we all do the same! We plead.
