BOKA president, David Mathe made the comments after Tsholofelo Maduma picked an injury last year while representing SSG Club under Kofukan Federation. The athlete is still not fully recovered despite competing in the first leg of the senior national team selection held over the weekend at the BOKA hall.

Mathe told Mmegi Sport that it is difficult to assist athletes who have been injured at their clubs. He said they can only assist if the athlete is in the national team.

“When the athlete is in the national team, we can assist the athlete using Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) funds. Other than that, we do not have an arrangement to assist athletes when they are not with the national team.

All we can do is to visit an injured athlete and nothing more,” he said.

For her part, Maduma said she does not have resources that can assist in the rehabilitation of her foot injury.

“I do not have rehabilitation. If I had a physiotherapist specialising in my injury, I could have long recovered. BOKA has never had interest in assisting me. All the medical expenses are being taken care of by my parents,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mathe said he was impressed by the attendance at the national team selection tournamnets. He said more than 100 karatekas from different styles came to try their luck. He said it was important to have such a large number so that they can have a large pool to choose from.

“Selection tournaments always have large attendances. We need a base to pick from for the all tournaments that are coming this year such as the World and Africa Championships,” he said.
