He said the prize will be administered by the BIUST vice chancellor and will be shared evenly at the price of P20,000 per occasion for 50 years.

“On behalf of the BIUST council, I have the honour to make the announcement of the decision by the Council to establish the Chancellor’s Prize. This prize will be given to a student assessed to have attained the best overall grades at every BIUST graduation and it begins at this historic ceremony where I have contributed a modest One Million Pula,” he said.

Mogae stated that the prize is intended to promote and encourage academic excellence. He also wished other graduates well, encouraging them not belittle themselves for not scooping the prize rather they should wear the honour of being the first BIUST graduates. Mogae also stated that it was always the conviction of the Botswana government and other stakeholders that the future of the country should be anchored on the ability to produce a varied and multifaceted core of graduates.

Furthermore, the aspiration of the Government is that these graduates should increasingly be in the fields of science, engineering and technology, which would be better skilled to meet the demands of knowledge-based global economy. “I am delighted to be one of the witnesses of this historic event, as it delivers the first set of graduates from BIUST and it is my hope that the market opens for them as it is without a doubt that they carry with them a pool of knowledge and skills that will transform our country’s economy,” he said.

An international student Mwanza Masuzyo, a graduate of Bachelor of Sciences, who also took first class in Applied Sciences, won the Chancellor’s prize. He also scooped the award of best student in a multidisciplinary programme. Masuzyo who couldn’t maintain his happiness told The Monitor in an interview that he couldn’t have achieved all of that if it wasn’t for his family for their continued support towards his academic life.

He also attributed his prize to the sleepless nights he had preparing for his exams and the teamwork from other fellow students as well as lectures.

“I am very grateful to this prize. This is the beginning of greater things yet to come. I will apply the knowledge and skills I learnt in BIUST to contribute towards the industry of science and technology. This honour also showed me that nothing is impossible provided we are dedicated to our work,” he added.
