Miss Millenium 2017 contestants listened to inspirational words from a variety of speakers.

Miss Globe Botswana 2016, Lorraine Ditsebe, who is also Miss Earth Botswana 2012, told aspiring queens that wearing a crown was not only about being glamorous. She said being a queen was about being a woman of virtue, strength, substance and honour.

“You need to be the influence. Be active. Don’t forget why you are crowned Miss Millennium. You have to own your crown,” she advised.

She said it was important for the reigning queen to treat her title with respect, as all eyes would be on her. She added that winning a pageant comes with responsibilities like travelling, meeting prestigious people and others.

“Mme ke thari ya sechaba. Our children and people around us must be proud of us. It is very important for Miss Millennium to know the importance of giving back. During your reign, you will be the centre of attraction. Grab that opportunity and use it to positively influence women around you. We expect you to show Batswana what you are made of,” she said.

For her part, Thato Masebo, a nurse by profession who is also a Health and Wellness Consultant urged the women to discover their craft. She said it was imperative for every woman to discover what she is passionate about and do it.

“When you have discovered your skills, take a step so that people know more about your craft.  Pamper and master it.  If you do not develop your craft it will go.  To pamper and master it, you must do things that you haven’t done before,” she advised.

Masebo said even though it was not going to be easy for women to master their talents, it was very important that they do not give up on their dreams.

She further advised them to be mindful of their circle of friends. She said their circle must be of value. Masebo added that they must keep people who nurture, support and encourage them to reach their goals. She advised the women to cultivate their circles.

“When you have people in your circle you must learn from them. Avoid negativity,” she said.

Mmakgosi Anita Tau, who is a mental health activist, mentor and woman of faith preached to the women about the secrets of scents. She said every person’s heart had a nose and one could smell a rat from a bad person.

“Your heart can tell you who is good or bad for you. Follow your heart. There is power in fragrances. God has the key ingredients that can make you a better person. A good perfume can turn your whole day great,” she said.

She added that if one’s natural fragrance was good it meant good health and if it was bad it meant bad health. Tau said in every good woman’s life there were scents of obedience, knowledge, beauty, sacrifice and destiny. She urged the audience to task themselves to be better individuals. She urged them to utilise the opportunity of being alive by pleasing God and helping others.

A local fashion designer, Kaone Moremong of House of Kay said it was high time women stopped being hard on themselves.

She said women must celebrate who they are and how they are instead of hating themselves.  “You are who you are and cannot change that. It is very important to feel beautiful in what you are wearing. Also wear beautiful underwear, as it will uplift your spirit. Love your selves. Love every scar, stretch mark and how you are. This can boost your self-esteem. Wear beautiful attire for no reason.  These can make people around you accept and respect you,” she said.

The CEO of African Wax Prints, Theo Bree, likened women to eagles.  She encouraged women to work hard and grab every opportunity that comes their way.

“In most cases, women undermine themselves.  Let’s stop that. Pull up your socks and work towards success,” she said.

This year, Miss Millennium beauty pageant will on its ninth anniversary.  It will be held on February 24 at Millenium Jazz Restaurant where the entrance fee will be P100 (for singles) and P175 (for doubles).  This event is coordinated by Zenzele Hirschfeld of Zen Promotions.
