Mahalapye police officer commanding, superintendent Modisaotsile Bonang confirmed the incident saying that the young man was boarding a Botswana Railways train that was coming from Francistown heading to Gaborone.  He said reasons that could have led to the young man allegedly taking the suicidal dive are unknown.

Bonang said in the wee hours of Monday at around 3am, they received a report that a young man had jumped off a moving passenger train at Morale, some 10 kilometres from Mahalapye toward Dibete.

He said the police responded promptly to the report and upon arrival at the scene, they indeed found the young man lying unconscious in a pool of blood with severe injuries.

He said the victim was immediately taken to Mahalapye District Hospital and was admitted before he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

“He died shortly after he was admitted. We were notified of his death around 10am on Monday. He had nothing on him that could lead us to the cause of the incident,” the police boss said, noting that they are still investigating the matter to find out what could have transpired for the deceased to pull such a stunt.

The police superintendent said they are yet to identify and notify the family of the deceased.  His corpse is held at the Mahalapye hospital mortuary.
