Amantle Ofetotse, a first year student, and Kesaobaka Kemorate, a second year student, made their first appearance in Extension II magistrate court yesterday.

They are accused of having committed the offence in the University premises last week.

According to the charge sheet, the duo, who reside on-campus are said to have “on or about the 8th day of February, 2017 stolen a blue overall suit valued at P200 being the property of the University of Botswana”.

Magistrate Ntombizodwa Ncube presided over the case, granting the accused a combined bail of P1,000. The bail conditions are thus they report to the Central Police Station every Wednesday as well as honouring set Court dates.

Attorney Kago Mokotedi represented the students while the prosecutor Motlalepula Sello represented the state. Their next mention date is June 19.

The defence counsel said they would engage the prosecution to discuss prospects of reconciliation as litigation would waste resources given that the property in question is a mere P200.

This is on the backdrop of last week’s demonstrations over living allowances, leading to the indefinite closure of the UB.
