BDP Guns Fall

The minister of environment, natural resources conservation and tourism and MP for Serowe West Tshekedi Khama’s court case against his party had taken the attention from the usually controversial BDP primaries; however, the election results got everyone talking after some party heavyweights were defeated.
While many were of the view that Khama would lose against Moemedi Dijeng whom he had wanted disbarred from contesting, he actually trounced him by a heavy margin.
However, the unexpected happened as the incumbent MP for Phikwe East and minister of presidential affairs, governance and public administration Nonofo Molefhi was the first to bite the dust.
Molefhi who challenged President Mokgweetsi Masisi for the party chairmanship last year lost against Amogelang Mojuta, who amassed 1,307 to Molefhi’s 1,136 votes. Another giant fell in Lobatse as former Cabinet minister Sadique Kebonang was walloped by Thapelo Matsheka.
Kebonang, who was dropped from his Cabinet portfolio as the minister of mineral resources, green technology and energy security earlier this year by Masisi garnered 1,063 to Matsheka’s 1,376.
Palelo Motaosane defeated Thamaga Kumakwane MP Tshenolo Mabeo who was voted by 2,239 people to Motaosane’s 3,842 votes to become the area’s MP elect. MP for Bobirwa and minister of defence, justice and security Shaw Kgathi is amongst those who fell as the BDP members ushered in newcomers to replace the old guards.
Kgathi, who has been the area MP for over 15 years, saw his reign come to a crushing end on Saturday as Francisco Kgoboko also defeated him.
Others who fell include Mmadinare MP Kefentse Mzwinila, Kgalagadi North MP Itumeleng Moipisi, Kgalagadi South MP France Van der Westhuizen and Mahalapye West MP Joseph Molefhe who was defeated by former area MP Bernard Bolele.
