Police Dismiss Abduction Rumours

The reaction of the police comes just days after the city fell into the grip of an abduction scare.

Recently social media reports emerged that there were two men driving black and white BMW sedans who were seen trying to lure children from the three schools into their cars with a view of abducting them.

The three schools fall under the Kutlwano Police Station policing area.

Yesterday Kutlwano police station commander, Neo Serumola said: “No one reported the incident to us.

We saw the social media post and followed the drivers of the two cars.”

He continued: “ We found nothing against the drivers of the cars in relation to what they have been linked to in the social media post.”  The police chief also said his station has not recorded any case in which a child has been abducted.

Serumola also urged members of the public to avoid making damning allegations about others in the social media without having tangible evidence.

“Some of the allegations raised in the social media amount to serious acts of defamation of character and can have serious legal implications to those who perpetuate them,” he warned.

The lengthy social media post read, “ Keep reminding your children not to talk or go near strangers.

Also tell them not to accept lifts from strangers who pretend to have been sent by parents to collect them. Please tell your relatives; this is a high security alert.

Continued the widely circulating post: “Satellite is a haven for knife-wielding muggers. Both children and parents have fallen victim. Please make sure that children are escorted to school. Keep reminding your children not to talk or go near strangers.”
