Chinese Painter Explores Malaika Story

Through this exhibition called Malaika’s Tour, the painter’s works were held at Masa Square hotel.
They are part of a cultural exchange programme organised by Malaika Gemstones to get artists to network.
Xiaozhou’s paintings comprise mainly of Chinese calligraphy and flowers. Malaika Gemstones also exhibited a range of their jewellery pieces alongside Xiaozhou’s exhibition.
The main attraction of the exhibition was Xiaozhou’s two-metre painting of Malaika, which told the story of a girl who sacrificed her life by turning into a lake so her village can have enough water to survive. The painting shows Malaika slowly turning into a lake.
“I was moved by the story of Malaika and what this exhibition aims to achieve. The people of Botswana are very artistic and appreciate art very much,” Xiaozhousaid.
She stated: “Due to my language limitation I have not been able to have deeper involvement with local artists. I am looking forward to working with local artists”.
The artist was however disappointed that there were no local artists to share the different experiences with.
The only people in the creative industry who attended the event were a couple of bloggers.
Former Miss Botswana Rose Keofitlhetse was facilitating the event.
