Not to be outdone, Matshekge Senior Secondary School from the same village also showed character in the junior women and men categories. Speaking to Monitor Sport after the marathon, Bobonong JSS coach, Phethi Mabelebele said they prepared for the cross country race together with the Botswana Integrated Sports Association.

“The preparations for this marathon included conducting training along Motloutse river. Running on the sand is meant to improve their stamina. After that session, I take them to a flat surface. You can see that they are fit athletes,” he said.

Mabelebele said every year he is able to produce stars because he has a strong training programme. He said after the students leave school, it is difficult to keep track of them. He said the idea was to establish a runners club that will cater for the runners in Bobonong. He said it is not good to lose such talent.

Mabelebele said students always perform well under him and when they join other clubs they drop in terms of performance. He said despite having interest in assisting athletes after they complete their studies, it is difficult due to financial challenges. He said the way forward now is to wait for the cross country finals.

There was a surprise winner in the 10km senior men marathon as Sesebo Matlapeng was outrun by Sylvester Koko of SSKB. Koko reached the finishing line in 32:17 while Matlapeng was in the second spot with a time of 32:24. Third position went to Dikgakgamatso Modisagape of Sports View Runners Club.

Koko said being in the Diacore marathon has assisted him a lot. Despite winning, Koko said he was not happy with his time, dropping from 30:00 from the last marathon held a fortnight ago in Kopong. The half marathon was sponsored by Khayelihle Guest House. The winners walked away with medals and trophies.
