Another T-virus nightmare

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Poster

Resident Evil: The Last Chapter is the name of the dystopian society that is reeling in the aftermath of this pandemic. This film is the fifth installment in the entire video game adaptation of the six film series that dates as far back as 2002 (Resident Evil). It was followed by Resident Evil Apocalypse,   Resident Evil Extinction, Resident Evil Afterlife, Resident Evil Retribution and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). This franchise launched around the same time as two other blockbusters namely Fast & Furious as well as xXx and they all seem to be growing by leaps and bounds.  It has inspired other video game franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Rachet and Clank just to name a few to venture into movie production.  After watching this startling thriller depicting an imaginary undesirable community, which is being annihilated by an incurable disease I almost felt like the UN should perhaps intervene. The gruesome events of this film begin to unfold when “Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse”. Jovovich reprises her trademark role as the brave protagonist that’s immune to fear unlike some of others including antagonist personality Dr. Alexander Isaacs. If you happen to pay good attention to detail you should have felt that the movie’s theme is the same dystopian theme as those from other dystopia blockbusters such as Death Race, World War Z, Elysium and so forth. It comes as no surprise as this film was directed by the very same movie writer who wrote huge films like Death Race and all other previous Resident Evil instalments.

Action

This is certainly one of the creepiest spine-chilling scary horror films I have laid eyes on. Evil was indeed present as one the film taglines goes. In my own view I felt that the Sci-Fi element was on point, the creators came up with a very indulging dystopian concept that captivated the imagination throughout by formulating a dilapidated world where large corporations completely rule the world, to the detriment of mankind. This film dominates the human mind through manipulation, intrusive advertisement and even through absolute control of resources and a strict limitation of available comforts to the protagonist, Alice. Like for instance Game of Thrones superstar playing Dr. Isaacs was willing to wipe all mankind by culling innocent lives out of selfishness. This greed-driven concept was reminiscent in one of Tom Hardy’s 2016 exploits, Inferno under which a huge chunk of the global population were to be culled.

Moving right along the horrific quality of the film is also on another level. Resident Evil: That Last Chapter had yours truly running for cover literally as the army of the undead (those infected with the T-virus) posed a threat to the last human survivors.  It felt as though they would transmit this new threat to everyone. Apart from that the cinematography excelled in the use of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) SFX as the film has scary creatures vying for blood.

For instance there are vicious mutilated dogs called the seberous (these hounds are super creepy.   Imagine a dog without fur only bones and blood tissue) it was a hair-raising experience. Not only them but there are demons in the mix as well. So this thriller is super exciting it actually caught most people offguard with the level of ecstasy.

Whilst it is piercing through our souls with horrific stuff, it makes one’s religious ethics come to mind as one begins to envisage the acclaimed judgment day from the holy, so better start repenting for salvation or else face the creatures Jovovich faced in her quest to liberate mankind. This brings us to the themes of this action blockbuster. The film thrives because of power struggle, greed, vengeance, survival, justice and liberation amongst some of its catalysts. I certainly enjoyed this blockbuster more so because of the fact that it has no loopholes, it fills you in with a soothing narration from past events putting one up to speed to be able to grasp this latest instalment.

I’m sorry for sounding like am biased towards this film, but I am honestly relaying the mood of the cinema during the gratifying premiere night. The theatre was lauded with silence and few whickers of fright and popcorn crunches signifying the level control the movie had on enthusiasts. The performance from protagonist Jovovich aka Alicia was very exquisite.  She complemented the action even to a point of sparking a very sensitive debate amongst fans of whether she is the reigning queen of action or if it is Avengers’ Scarlet Johannson or better yet Underworld’s Kate Beckinsale who takes the title.

Quotes from the movie that shed Fear

Dr. Issacs: I propose we cleanse the earth and when it’s all set and done a new earth will be reborn from this antidote

Dr. Issacs: I am you, you idiot, the real you.

Reception

This horror and its terrifying army of the undead failed to scare off its competition at Box Office, as it only premiered with sales of $13 million late January. With only two weeks on circuit the film has outdone other blockbusters like xXx  as it peaked at fourth on premiere night before slipping down to sixth place this week. To date it has amassed an incredible $118 million blowing its $40 million production budget to smithereens.

Ratings

This is one thrilling experience that had fanatics mesmerised after a disappointing xXx ordeal.  I award this a 10/10 flawless.
