Member of Parliament for Palapye, Master Goya said this during the BSE open day at Botsalo Hotel here on Monday. The day was held under the theme, ‘Your partner in wealth creation’.

Goya said generally Batswana are more comfortable with investing in the traditional forms of investments such as property and keeping livestock, which are difficult to diversify unlike with BSE, which gives one a room to alternative products.

“As you would learn today diversifying one’s investment portfolio to include BSE listed companies has the benefit of reducing the risk one is exposed to. Diversification reduces the chances of overall financial loss,” he said.

Goya, who is also the assistant minister of Basic Education, added that to remain abreast of the ever-changing market trends, investors need to be continuously updated on the latest products and developments.

“It is therefore imperative that Batswana become open minded and actively seek information on the stock market,” he said.

He urged the Small, Medium & Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to utilise BSE and shift from the mindset that it is for the bigger businesses such as the Choppies Group.

“BSE is not only a market place where investment products are traded.

The BSE is also a platform where entrepreneurs and businesses, regardless of size can raise capital to grow their operations as such today’s open day does not only speak to investors, it also speaks to businessmen gathered here today who have the ambition to grow,” said Goya.

He furthered said the government prides itself on how the BSE has assisted in growing privately owned entities to achieve their strategic goals by using the exchange to grow therefore playing an integral role in driving the growth and diversification of the economy.

Goya also applauded the residents for coming in large numbers to the forum noting that Batswana are now warming up to the idea of buying shares in the stock market which has over the years seemed foreign.

For his part, BSE chief executive officer Thapelo Tsheole assured Batswana that investing with the BSE will guarantee wealth creation.

He said although there are risks associated with buying shares on the stock market such as the regular change of share prices that go up and down, it is worth it as its dividends are high as compared to other investments and one do not just get exposed to local investments rather to the global village as a whole.

He also advised people to desist from selling their shares whenever the price goes down.

“Most times people want the quickest way of making money without thinking long-term hence whenever the prices on the stock market go down their first solution is to sell. Stock exchange is all about faith and hope. Without those elements, I am afraid you cannot be able to invest with the BSE,” he advised.
