Sesa calls for Cabinet reshuffle

Over the weekend, nine members of Masisi’s Cabinet Ministers lost their constituencies in the 40 Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) held constituencies.
Sesa argued that many Cabinet Ministers who had lost primary elections might not be able to concentrate on their Ministries again because they know that they would not come back in 2019.
“We cannot expect someone to deliver when the person is still bitter or unhappy with party primary elections turnout. I expect President Masisi to announce Cabinet reshuffle soon. This would also help to avoid crime quickly. If Cabinet reshuffle does not happen then corruption will happen. Is possible for outgoing Ministers to start to influence people to award them tenders as a way of preparing for their way out,” Sesa said.
He said if reshuffle is done then productivity is not going to be affected since other Ministries are crucial.
Sesa said Masisi should promote those who were assistant Ministers and appoint some.
“What happened over the weekend is a clear sign that some BDP members have started to take their party primaries very serious. Even the number of people who voted over the weekend shows that members came in large numbers. Again it’s a disadvantage for the party to drop core Ministers.”
Sesa said its time for BDP to consider having special consideration for cabinet Ministers because they take most of the time concentrating on Ministries while another member is position themselves in the area.
He said Ministers might have lost primaries because those who managed to take them out have all been campaigning in those constituencies.
The University of Botswana lecturer said the BDP members have started a new trend where they spend a lot on primaries than general elections because they now that chances for one to lose is slim.
He said this on its own is likely to divide them going forward because it’s disadvantaging those who do not have power cash to contest for primaries.
Sesa says its time political parties engages experts in their party primary elections to help them deal with issues of compromise and unity after elections.
He said is not good for a party to be having more than three candidates contesting for one position especially during primaries because they end up failing to support one another in general elections.
