DPSM was today accounting before the committee where the permanent secretary, Goitseone Moselakatane admitted that vacancies existed within different ministries.

Committee member, Mephato Reatile questioned why there were many vacancies, yet public service management was doing nothing about.

He questioned why interns engaged by different ministries and departments are not absorbed, as they are already familiar with the work.

“Having closely worked with different councils, I know that there are many vacancies but they can not fill those posts because of DPSM. Why should Batswana suffer without jobs just because of one person called DPSM,” he said.

Another committee member, Polson Majaga asked if it was not best for the DPSM to be disbanded and allow ministries to fill their own posts and also with the people they desired.

Moselakatane however insisted that the DPSM was functional and that it was only due to the fact they use the data base to fill posts

She explained that it was on a ‘first come’ basis when filling posts and that the difficulty was qualifications for certain points.

“The DPSM is still a functional tool and it is committed to availing possible posts to Batswana recorded on our data base,” she explained.

On the available post vacancies, she said there were about 7,000 posts and that majority is at the Ministry of Justice, Security and Defence at 13%, Infrastructure at 10% while Ministry of Education stands at 9.5%.

She also explained at the request of committee member, Dithapelo Keorapetse that the budget for those vacancies stood at P985 million.
