Suspected FMD reported in Matsiloje

In a brief statement, Dr Kebonyeng Makgetho, a principal veterinary officer (North East) reported 200 cattle incursion from the neighbouring Zimbabwe into Botswana through the cordon fence along the border between pickets 8 and 5 which is regarded as a hotspots for elephants in the North East District. 

He said his department decided to take some control measures like not allowing out of Zone 6B and Matsiloje extension area movement of cloven hooved animals and their fresh products.

Another control measure instituted include suspending with immediate effect slaughtering of cloven hooved animals in slaughter facilities in Zone 6B. 

“Beef export to European Union and other trading partners is suspended with immediate effect until further notice. Animals for slaughter for social activities e.g. weddings, funerals would be allowed at the discretion of the extension officer.

In view of the foregoing you are asked to widely publicize these movement restrictions to the farming community and all other stakeholders. You will updated of any further developments in due course.”
