Former boxer launches boxing club

Speaking at the club launch, Khubamang said it is his passion for boxing that drove him to start his own club. “I then partnered with Cakic as we saw that there was a need to come up with a club in order to nurture talent and develop future boxers,” he said. He said they intend to work hand in hand with Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) to develop boxing. “It is our duty as former boxers to revive the sport. Boxing used to be one of the top performing codes, but that’s no longer the case so I can assure all those here that this club is going to develop two or three boxers who are going to represent Botswana at the next Olympics. They are not just going to represent but they are going to bring home medals,” he promised. Khubamang said they adopted Sir Seretse Khama Junior Secondary School in their efforts to develop boxing. “We will be training their students for free. We want to make champions out of them, as we want to make this place a home of champions forever,” he stated. He said they also want to work with Botswana Rugby Union, as they want to develop boxers from rugby.
BoBA president Thato Patlakwe was pleased with the new initiative.
“I am very delighted and honoured to witness this launch, as BoBA we want to see growth and we will always support these kind of initiatives from anyone who wants to develop our sport,” he said. Patlakwe further said it was good to witness a boxing facility that has more equipment than BOBA. “We are privileged to be given the opportunity to come and utilise it. Let’s treasure this opportunity,” he said. He further challenged Khubamang to work very hard on his dream of producing three boxers who will represent Botswana at the 2020 Olympics. The club welcomed its new members among them renowned boxers, Kgotla Baeti, Steven Bagwasi and Lesly Sekotswe.
