Sharps set sights on BTC Premiership

The club changed its name from Sharps Electrical to Sweeping Stars in 2015.

Sharps have accumulated 21 points to sit head and shoulders above powerhouses, Notwane, Mogoditshane Fighters, Letlapeng and Santos.

Club chairman, Molefhe Molefhe said he believes in building the team ‘brick by brick’. He said the decision to keep the same coach, Wilfred Mahaja ever since their days in the Third Division was an indication that the club knew where it was going. Molefhe said he had to change the mindset of other committee members to put the club on the right track. “When you build a house, you start with the foundation until the roof. It is a project, just like a club. We spent the past two seasons building our club. Now it is time for the work that we have been doing to bear fruits. At the moment, things are going according to plan,” he said.

Molefhe said the intention is to fight for promotion to the BTC Premiership League and also compete in bigger cup competitions. He added that they do not want to gain promotion only to return after a short stint. He said they want ‘permanent residence’ in the BTC Premiership League.

Meanwhile, Molefhe explained that the club’s name change came when Sharps Electrical Ltd management wanted to disassociate the company from the team. He said the company was not a sponsor but the two had a certain agreement of association.

The team is expected to play a re-scheduled fixture against Notwane tomorrow. Notwante failed to pitch up, citing lack of communication from the league committee. Molefhe said the postponement of the game affected both players and management physiologically.

“Playing against Notwane is like playing a derby. We had pulled all our efforts together in preparing for the clash. We knew what was at stake. We even suffered financial loss due to the postponement,” Molefhe said.

Other matches that were cancelled last week have been re-scheduled for tomorrow with other teams taking a break.
