Osi-Moses was laid to rest last weekend after passing on a fortnight ago at  Gaborone Private Hospital. She had shown intentions to challenge for the top post.

Maifala, who has faced criticism for his leadership style at times, has long announced his intention to seek another term.

The ping-pong chief was voted into office in 2014 and has not had the best of times in office, as he was accused of lack of communication and maladministration.

Maifala however still fancies his chances despite the opposition.

“Obviously they will be those who will not be happy with the work I have put in. But we have been the best committee thus far. The only problem we have had with our clubs has been the cancellation of some tournaments. In terms of bringing sponsorships and revenue, we have been the best, and I will stand for the upcoming elections,” he declared in a previous interview with Mmegi Sport.

The association’s executive committee election has been delayed as they await a new revised constitution.

“Like we have alluded before, we are waiting for the constitution from the Registrar of Societies. We would like to call elections in accordance with the new constitution. It is not in our hands; we are just waiting for a call form the Registrar of Societies,” BTTA competitions secretary, Kudzanani Motswagole told Mmegi Sport yesterday.

He further said the association’s activities will not be affected by the election delays as they had already prepared in time for such circumstances.

“We have long created a strategic structure for our events. Our tournaments are not organised and run by the committee but by the clubs.

They use their resources while our Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) grants are used for the national teams and our development programmes,” he said.

The new BTTA constitution is expected to pave way for a new structure that will include the position of vice president (technical). The new constitution will see BTTA’s financial period align with the BNSC financial year that begins in April and ends in March.

Meanwhile, after cancelling the first tournament of the year, the Junior Open will kick off the table tennis’ activities on February 11. The tournament will be hosted by New Horizon table tennis club, followed by the Veterans’ tournament.
