The Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) had applied for funding to the BNSC to hold its first activity of the year on Saturday, but was informed that normal funding procedure remains in place.

As per procedure, Reikeletseng said BNSC releases 30% to affiliates for administration while the remaining 70% stays with the Commission and is reserved for development.

BoBA wanted to start the year’s activities last Saturday with the inter-club competition but the event was cancelled due to lack of funding.

BoBA competitions manager, Phetogo Tsheko told Mmegi Sport they had sent a request to the BNSC requesting for funds.

He said in turn, BNSC informed them that they did not have money to assist the boxing association.

“We had thought that the BNSC would come to our rescue but unfortunately they turned us down. UB Boxing Club was way ahead in preparing for the tournament. When we received a letter from the BNSC, we had to cancel everything. We hope that the next inter-club to be hosted by Mafika Club will go ahead as expected,” he said. Reikeletseng said the BNSC does not sponsor local championships. He said their responsibility is to fund development, which includes taking care of national teams when they participate in international competitions.

“We give our affiliates 30% of their grant, which is administration fee and we remain with 70%. The money that remains with us is meant for development,” Reikeletseng said.

He said when affiliates host events, they are expected to seek assistance from the private sector.

Tsheko said they were aware of the BNSC’s arrangement but thought they will get assistance. Meanwhile, Reikeletseng said the BNSC financial year has been aligned to that of the government. He said they expect an increase in the grant from the government, which has remained at around P70 million per year. He said they also do not expect to cut affiliates’ grants like they did in the past financial year.
