Mogoditshane Police Investigate Hit And Run

The hit and run accident occurred at Mmatseta junction on Saturday night at around 8pm. Assistant superintendent, Zachariah Tshenyego confirmed the incident to The Monitor.

Tshenyego said they received the report from a passerby who saw the 62-year-old woman laying on the road bleeding.

“Investigations are ongoing to locate the suspect who fled the crime scene. We do not have concrete evidence of what have transpired, but we are still investigating the matter,” said Tshenyego.

“Police investigation team is working around the clock to locate the driver and the car that hit her. We are pleading with members of the public who could have witnessed the accident or having any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) and determine who was responsible for the woman’s death.”

He stated that the old woman, whose names are still withheld, was rushed to Bokamoso Private Hospital where she was admitted but unfortunately passed away after three hours.

“The old woman had sustained injuries on her head and body, but had serious head injuries,” he said.

Tshenyego said despite not having statistics at the time of the interview, road accidents involving pedestrians in his area of jurisdiction are now becoming worrisome because lives are lost.

He pleaded with motorists to be cautious at all times and to reduce speed when approaching the traffic lights or junctions to avoid unnecessary accidents.

“Drivers should be cautious at all times because they might not know what is happening at the other side especially by the traffic lights,” he said.

He added that they are trying all they can as the police in cautioning members of the public especially drivers about the dangers of reckless driving, but it seems their message is falling on deaf ears.

“People continue to over speed and drink while driving, something that puts their lives in danger despite our continued education,” Tshenyego added.

Motorists have been urged to be observant, cautious and ensure that they stay vigilant over pedestrians to avoid unnecessary fatal accidents.

He also called on pedestrians to be cautious when crossing or walking by the road side.

“Pedestrians should pay attention to what is happening around them when walking by the side of the road and avoid being distracted whilst walking by the roadside,” he said.
