Delayed: The second round of the basketball league has not resumed

The first round ended in the first week of December. Speaking to Mmegi Sport this week, BBA public relations officer, Thabang Maranyane said the introduction of new sub committees caused delays to the start of the second round of the league.

“At the moment, we are in the process of cleaning our house and we already have our sub committees formed to run the second round of the league.

These are the referees’ committee and the league committee. The league committee will be responsible for the administration and operations of the league, while the referees’ committee will be responsible for running of the game in a professional manner with the help of match commissioners, referees and table officials,” Maranyane said.

He said the previous sub committees were removed mainly because their technical director, Marvin Griffith wanted change.

He said the introduction of technical match commissioners is a new way of doing things in their league to help with compliance, statistics and to grow the competencies of referees and officials in basketball.

He said the league has no sponsors at the moment.

“But the executive committee is in the process of identifying organisations that we can form strategic partnerships with to grow the sport and also sponsor the league,” he said. Maranyane further noted that there has not been significant change over the past 20 years for basketball in Botswana.

“We want to bring development and strategic partnerships with stakeholders and the public,” he said. The log leaders from the men’s Division One are Dolphins whereas Botho Saints lead the men’s Division Two. Police V lead the women’s league.
