Addressing the traditional leaders in their opening session yesterday, Gaborone said he hoped Batswana were making good use of the rains to improve national food security.

“I take this time to encourage Batswana to take good care of their fields. I wish to encourage farmers to make good use of the rains by harvesting water, which is a scarce resource in our country. I hope they are also making good use of the rains by planting animal feed like lablab, lucerne and others,” he said.

Gaborone added that he was praying for a good harvest this year that would ultimately contribute to the recovery of the country’s grain reserves.

He thanked dikgosi throughout the country for championing ploughing by tirelessly working with villagers.

The Batlokwa paramount chief also expressed his delight in the rising dam levels across the country, but noted that he was aware and felt compassion for those affected by recent flooding.

Gaborone also commended all the students and pupils who did well in their examinations.

He further reminded learners that the world is very competitive, saying that Botswana was depending on their dynamism to move its development along in future.

“I wish to encourage students to develop a habit of dialogue in all challenges that they go through. Our children should desist from vandalism, acts of truancy, drug and alcohol abuse and concentrate on making their future,” he advised.

The chairperson added that the role of dikgosi could not be forgotten as they play a pivotal role in encouraging their schools to perform better.

“Dikgosi wherever they are they must make it a point that they get involved in the relevant school activities.

I encourage school leadership to involve dikgosi as much as they can in shaping the students’ future in all our schools across the country,” he said.
