Continental role: Sharp

The appointment was made by the executive management of PWA in Yaounde, Cameroon last week.

Sharp is the representative of Pro Wrestling Africa in Botswana for the next four years (2017-2021).He told Mmegi Sport yesterday from his base in Selebi-Phikwe that he was excited about the new responsibility. He said it was an indication that he was doing a good job. Sharp said PWA has been monitoring him since he established BWF in 2003.

“I should be doing something that is making them happy when compared to my colleagues in the region. I have been working with PWA for many years and we always interact during international meetings,” he said.

The role of the new second vice president includes representing the PWA in Botswana and securing sponsors locally and in southern Africa.

Sharp said the new position puts local wrestling on the international map. He said it also means BWF would introduce Pro Wrestling. He said at the moment the federation has been focusing much on grassroots development. “We have been working with primary school pupils more especially in Selebi-Phikwe. We are now going to have amateur and professional wrestling.  Professional wrestling is a dramatised athletic performance inspired by competitive combat sports,” he said.

Sharp said the introduction of professional wrestling is expected to attract sponsors into the sport. He said there is a good chance that professional wrestlers from countries such as South Africa might visit Botswana as part of promoting the sport. He said there are many people who have interest in professional wrestling. Sharp said televised professional wrestling has a large following. He said having such massive support, it would be easy to source sponsorship.

“We do not want to disappoint PWA. We should work hard to make sure that we complete our term while on the continental body’s good books,” Sharp said.
