Graduates Urged To Be For Self-Reliant

They carry this lesson with them as they enter a new phase in their lives, the assistant minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Fidelis Molao has said.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony at the UB Indoor Sports Centre, Molao said jobs would not be offered to the graduates on a silver platter hence there is need for change of mindset. 

He said they should look for alternatives and create jobs for themselves thus helping in growing the economy.

 “I must advise you graduands that you should not expect to find jobs ready for you.  You are entering a very competitive and rough terrain.

Let us change the mindset and see how we can create jobs ourselves,” he said. 

Molao further expressed confidence in the skills the graduates have acquired from the institutions as he said they would help the graduates compete in the current job and business markets once put to good use.

 “I am confident that you have acquired the necessary skills during your training to enable you to fit into this competitive terrain.

You will need to be innovative in the way you use these skills otherwise the skills you have acquired will not be of benefit to you at all.

I urge you to embark on continuous self-development so that you stay relevant and abreast with new approaches,” he said.

 For her part, the permanent secretary in the ministry of Health and Wellness, Ruth Maphorisa said there is need of change in the market and the graduates need to be bold and creative as they enter a challenging phase.

“I request you to keep this in mind as globally the workplace is moving from a protective and cozy mentality society towards a more challenging and demanding entrepreneurial society. 

To achieve this shift, with the gradual vanishing of the golden cages you will need to be bold, hard working and proactive to succeed exceedingly with greater responsibility,” she said.

The event had graduates from colleges of education, technical colleges, the Institute of Health Sciences and was held under the theme Tertiary Education: A pathway to economic growth and prosperity for all.
