The sixth man, Charlotte Ndlovu, who is awaiting trial for murder was arrested in Tutume on Saturday. He is the second escapee to be arrested in the village.

Police in neighbouring Zimbabwe have also arrested another escapee,Thabani Ncube bringing to seven convicts and remand prisoners so far nabbed. Ncube’s arrest in Zimbabwe contradicts the police’s midweek stance that the 18 prisoners have not skipped the country.

“The information we have since gathered is that Ncube was wanted in connection with a theft offence he allegedly committed in Zimbabwe, which happens to be his home country.

“Our government will engage Zimbabwean authorities to see how Ncube is brought to the country (Botswana) in order to stand trial,” Wamorena Ramolefhe, spokesperson at the Department of Prisons and Rehabilitation said.  Ncube is facing a murder charge in Botswana.

Ndlovu is expected to appear in court some time this week to face a charge of unlawfully escaping from legal custody.

Five men, Gaomodimo Molosiwa who is doing time for a spate of robbery offences, Mlindeli Moyo, who is charged with murder, Methuli Sibanda, who is facing a charge of unlawful possession of ivory, Sicelo Sibanda, who is charged with murder and Godwin Mapunganyika, who is also charged with murder as well as various counts of armed robbery, were arrested in the middle of last week. Apart from Molosiwa, all the arrested escapees have since appeared in court, but are yet to make their pleas.

The escapees who are still at large are Chakalani Barati, Musa Willy, Elvis Ndlovu, Dzikhamani Ndebele, Innocent Nyoni, Ronald Moyo, Edwin Ncube, Sunganai Tafiraushe, Givemore Chaloba, Brilliant Thabisani and Bruce Masuku.

Fifteen of the alleged fugitives are from Zimbabwe while three are Batswana. Molosiwa is the only Motswana who has since been re-captured. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 34-year-old mechanic working for Unik Construction was on Friday killed in a freak accident while carrying out routine inspection on one of the company trucks.

The incident happened at the company premises along the Francistown/Matsiloje road. Police said the Bobonong-born man was pronounced dead on the scene.

“It appears as if the driver drove the truck under the impression that the mechanic had completed the routine check. Unfortunately, at the time, the mechanic was still under the truck assessing it and in the process the truck ran over him,” Central Police Station commander, Lebalang Maniki said.

Maniki said that the driver may be charged with an offence of causing death by dangerous driving if he is found to have acted negligently.
