We are almost there: Barata-Phathi

Party spokesman Sidney Pilane told Mmegi yesterday that the party steering committee has been meeting to deliberate on these aspects.

'We had a meeting last night where we continued our discussions on the draft constitution. We also discussed at length the 10 names which the Registrar of Societies had said were ready for use,' said Pilane.

The committee also discussed a name that was suggested by a caller to Gabz FM when Pilane conducted an interview with the radio station. Pilane said while they had not reached a conclusion on both the name and the constitution, they hope to finish by Sunday.

'The constitution is an important document and needs careful consideration. The issue of the name is as important, as shown also by the animated manner of the discussion,' he said.

Pilane dismissed rumors that the committee was unable to reach a consensus because it would not agree on the aspect of a name.

'As I said, we should be able to conclude by Sunday and to lodge papers with the Registrar early next week,' he said.

Asked if the constitution under discussion will be the final document, Pilane said that it would be temporary.

'Obviously the constitution can only be interim because the ultimate document will need to be debated and agreed upon by members of the party - it is important that they have ownership of the resultant product.'
