The runner could have flown to Spain on Wednesday, but unfortunately the trip was cancelled due to the injury. Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) had already given her clearance to travel.

Dintwe said she started feeling pain on her ankle and there was no sign that she had a fracture.

“I twisted my ankle last year and I ignored that. I think this fracture is also from that incident. I informed my club manager in South Africa who advised me to see a specialist. The specialist told me that I had a fracture and I should go on a break for six weeks,” she said.

Dintwe said the fracture is a result of intensive training that she was doing in December. She said the plan is to follow the doctor’s orders until such a time when she is ready to return.

Despite that, the athletes promised to be back and would be defending her title at the Diacore Gaborone marathon in May.

Dintwe is a professional runner and a member of Nedbank runners club in South Africa. She is also part of the Diacore Gaborone marathon project.

The marathon project assists athletes with training, nutritional support and accommodation.

The project is meant to develop long distance runners in the country.

The project manager, Malebo Raditladi said she was aware of Dintwe’s injury. She said they have also taken the runner to a physiotherapist in Gaborone who also came up with the same diagnosis.

“She informed me about her injury five days ago. The injury is not career threatening and she will be back after six weeks. She is not putting on a plaster but just a supporter. It shows that the injury is not that serious,” Raditladi said. Meanwhile, she said by participating in the Gran Canaria marathon, Dintwe was going to become the first Motswana to take part. She said the marathon is the first of World Championships qualifiers.
