The project is still at design stage and the club is expected to change the face of sport tourism in the country. BGU president, Enoch Mushango told Mmegi Sport that before the area was surveyed the initial cost was P85 million.

He said the cost went up after land survey was carried out.

He said the development of the golf club would include roads, water reticulation, resident clubhouse, golf academy and golf course among others.

“The aforementioned are a priority at the moment.

The golf course is going to be extended from par 71 to par 72. The idea behind this development is to bring back Sunshine Tour to Botswana. We also want to promote sport tourism in the city,” he said.

Mushango said a certain company has approached the BGU with a proposal to develop the club after going through the BGU, Botswana National Sport Commission and Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development.

He said the intention is to come up with a quality sport infrastructure. He said they also intend to turn the golf club into a business facility by selling land to property developers.

“We have to think outside the box and come up with ways that can see us diversifying our sport.

The golf club is in a prime area and most people are interested in owning a piece of it. We should capitalise on that and recover costs,” Mushango said.

He confirmed that the BNSC has approved the development of the golf club and the only outstanding issue is for other stakeholders such as Gaborone City Council to agree.

He said the council, as the custodians of developments in the city, would have to give the plan the green light when it has been completed.
