The hailstorm started before any of the party leadership, who were on the line-up, could address the few members who attended the rally while others had not even arrived.

Those who were scheduled to speak included party president Sidney Pilane, vice president Dr Tlamelo Mmatli, secretary general Gilbert Mangole and Nehemiah Modubule. The party president Pilane and secretary general had not yet arrived when it started to rain heavily.

Councillor for Bonnington North, Rhoda Sekgororoane told Lobatse residents that they are concerned about the reports that their party is suspended from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).

“There is no one who can fire us from UDC. We are going to fight with everything to be members of UDC. The reason why some in the UDC leadership want to fire us is because they want BMD constituencies,” Sekgororoane said.

“The constituencies have been divided accordingly and we accepted the few that were given to us, but surprisingly some parties started to write to us demanding the ones that we have. We cooperated by giving Botswana Congress Party (BCP) one of our constituencies, but we can’t keep on giving all parties constituencies,” she added. What is even more surprising, according Sekgororoane is that other party leaders kept on saying bad things about Pilane. When he responded, they complained about his utterances.

Pilane was there for the BMD during the hard times and throughout Ndaba Gaolathe’s leadership, the latter chose the former to represent the party when the UDC constitution was drafted.

Sekgororoane said now some are tarnishing Pilane’s name by claiming that he is involved in the Directorate of Intelligence and Security funds fracas.

She said the UDC leadership used Pilane to come to the rescue of some university students who were let go by the institution.

“Pilane ke mosamarea. O thusitse batho bale bantsi. A ba bue gore bare molato wa gagwe ke eng,” Sekgororoane said.

BMD national organising secretary, Freddy Ramodise said the biggest enemy of UDC is BCP because it is the one that does not want to cooperate with other parties.  He said the problems within the UDC began when they accepted the BCP and it started with the big brother mentality, which the Botswana National Front supported.
