The collapse of the party structures follows after members of the BDP branches aligned themselves with their preferred candidates, a move that goes against the party constitution.

Kweneng East region recently held urgent meetings with their different constituencies in order to show them the need to hold branch congresses within a space of two weeks. Kweneng East region is made up of Mogoditshane, Gabane-Mmankgodi, Thamaga-Kumakwane and Letsweletau-Mmopane constituencies.

“It is true the region met with BDP members for different constituencies in order to try to bring peace amongst the members and also to ensure that branch committees are revived in each constituency,” Kweneng regional chairperson, Driver Motlokwa said.

“Before the primary elections we had branch committees, but it was unfortunate that some of the committee members decided to align themselves with some members who were contesting for elections, something that is against the constitution. That’s how some of the committee members for branches were automatically forced to resign.”

He said the party could not go to next year’s general elections with collapsed structures since branch committees are responsible for coordinating party activities in the constituency.

Motlokwa said they were also requesting the party members, especially those who were contesting for primary elections to cooperate since the party constitution binds them to do so.

“The constitution requires unsuccessful candidates to demonstrate commitment, loyalty and support to the party and its candidate while the party candidate is to take responsibility to work cooperatively with the branch committee and the unsuccessful candidates in fostering party unity,” he said.

He said the region has not yet received any correspondence from the party central committee on whether there is a complainant regarding the last rerun of the party primary elections in Lentsweletau-Mmopane or not.

However, Motlokwa expressed concern that some BDP members who were contesting for general elections are not attending regional meetings intended to foster peace.
