The state alleges that Kabelo Chamo, 37, hacked Tshegofatso Tene with an axe on the head at Mhakamme ward in Tonota on October 14, 2018.

In the second count, the state alleges that Chamo hacked Benny Amos with an axe on the head on the same day and ward in Tonota.

The police said Amos was struck with an axe on his forehead after he tried to foil Chamo from hacking Tene to death with an axe.

According to inspector Fanilo Manyapedza, Chamo and Tene were lovers and it is suspected that the hacking was sparked by a love dispute.

Chamo, whose plea was reserved because police investigations are at an initial stage, was arrested on October 15 after he escaped following his alleged legal transgressions.

Manyapedza said: “The accused has a pending murder case at the High Court. One of his bail conditions stipulated that he should not commit any offence whilst on bail. He violated that bail condition and as such, we pray that he be remanded in custody because he has shown that he has a penchant for committing offences while on bail”.

He added: “In the murder case that is before the High Court, the accused is alleged to have murdered the mother of his children in Masunga”.

However, Manyapedza’s submission did not go down well with magistrate Kaveri Kapeko who advised him that he should follow procedure and call the investigations officer to give evidence why the accused should be remanded in custody.

In response to what the prosecution said, Chamo pleaded with the court to grant him bail, but his prayers were not successful.

The court also heard that after Chamo allegedly hacked Tene with an axe, she stayed at Tonota Police Station because she feared for her life.

The accused is due in court on October 29 for bail hearing.
