He told Mmegi Sport yesterday that he felt it was time to call it a day as he has done his part and someone has to take over.

“I have run my race and it is time somebody takes the button. The main focus is the development of chess and players in the country. My plan is to focus on other things,” he said.

Maruatona said at the moment he was not aware of anybody who is interested in succeeding him.

He said during his tenure, his committee forged relationships with various sponsors and potential partners. He said people must be aware that sponsorship is not about the code but it is how the management relates with sponsors. He gave an example of Debswana Mining Company, saying their sponsorships have been increasing every year during his tenure. Maruatona said he always encouraged his committee to make sure that they update sponsors about developments within the BCF. He said the most important thing to retain a sponsor is trust. He said sponsors should have trust in the management of an association before they can give out their money.

Meanwhile, information reaching Mmegi Sport is that the BCF public relations director, Keenese Katisenge has shown interest in contesting for the presidency. She faces challenge from Kenneth Boikhutshwane and Kefilwe Miti. Boikhutshwane would be trying his luck for the fourth time.

The BCF elections committee is yet to open nominations.
