Assistant superintendent Oarabile Hulela of Maun police explained that they received a report that the woman was found motionless at the family home where she was alone. He said upon arrival they discovered that the woman had been assaulted due to bruises on her body. Hulela explained that they are still awaiting a postmortem report to determine the cause of death.

He further revealed that they have in their custody a 25-year-old man for questioning who is believed to be the deceased’s boyfriend.

“Our investigations into this case have just started. We hope to make a breakthough soon,” he stated. Hulela further explained that the Zambian is unemployed and resident in Maun.

In another separate case, a man suffocated to death after a sand pit collapsed on him at Samedupi on Friday last week.

Hulela confirmed that the incident happened on Friday when the 43-year-old man and other men were loading sand into a truck. Hulela explained that apparently the sand pit collapsed due to the soil wet conditions. Hulela explained that the deceased’s partners managed to escape. He added: “We received a report about the accident around 7pm and rushed to the scene.

When we arrived we found that the deceased had been retrieved from the collapsed pit. He was motionless and we rushed him to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital where he was confirmed dead.”

The deceased, who is well known in Maun, operated a building sand supplies business. Hulela explained that they are appealing to people who excavate sand during the rainy season to exercise due care as the wet ground is prone to collapsing.

Meanwhile Hulela further revealed that a 72-year-old man who went missing on Wednesday last week while going to his cattlepost in Xhana was discovered last Friday.

Hulela revealed that the elderly man said he lost directions on the way to the cattlepost due to heavy rains.

In another incident, four children aged seven, eight, and nine years who also went missing on Saturday also reportedly due to rainy conditions and were found on Saturday by search parties. They had gone to gather wild berries. Hulela explained that they organised two search parties comprising the police and members of the public and the Botswana Defence Force helicopter.

He said one of the search parties managed to locate the children. Hulela said members of the public should avoid walking in the bush when it is raining as it is easy to get lost.
