Where Words Fail, Art Shall Speak

Sefako is inspired by a Nigerian artist Oscar Ukuno who uses pen to make his art. He said it is a gateway of being unique from many artists in Botswana. “I aspire to capture pictures vividly as I see them with the emotion my heart feels towards them, and to be as creative at the same time creating a story which people can relate to,” he said. “Where words fail, art shall speak”- is a personal motto which drives him to do his work. He explained that he is inspired by situations that he faces in life which motivate him to do his art. He uses his art to voice out his opinions on issues affecting him and his society. “I entered the President competitions for the first time and I scooped position two under the drawing category,” he said.

Sefako also said he entered  the Thapong Visual Arts competitions and got P12,000 as Young Artist of the Year. “This year I am doing an exhibition of hyper realism artworks to showcase what I have been cooking,” he added. Sefako will be participating in all art competitions this year to enhance his skills.

“My cousin, who is also my mentor, Mpho Mokgatle, is the one who guides my work,” he said. Sefako said he is not only drawing but also runs a clothing label called ‘Skeem Saam, which he runs with his friend Bakang Matswiri. “We also splash paint on caps and it’s a marketable product,” he noted.

Sefako further stated that he enjoys drawing especially when bored and does commission artworks for his clients, something that helps him improve his skills. Apart from drawing, he enjoys playing video games with his friends and chilling like any other typical youth.

“Whenever I draw, it feels like I’m totally lost in another world which exists only between my pen and paper,” he concluded.
