Another charged in Gabs nightclub murder

The prosecution yesterday charged 26-year-old Oabile Dibobo with similar counts to the six others, Nicholas Itshekeleng, Gobusamang Mothibi, Batshabi Montsho, Tshepo Mokalare, Keolopile Moshote and Ditiro Reboeleng when they appeared before Extension II Magistrate Ntombizodwa Ncube.

The gang faces three counts including that of the murder of Jacob Kabelo Bogatsu. According to the charge sheet, the crime was committed in the wee hours of Sunday morning on October 30, 2016 near Caltex filling station and Zoom nightclub.

In court, the Investigating Officer (IO) Detective Sergeant Matibili said that two more suspects were still at large. He applied that accused number seven (Dibobo) be remanded in custody as investigations were not complete.

He said that they arrested the accused on January 6, 2017 in Ranaka after looking for him for sometime. “He has been on the run. During his arrest, there have been some developments that would assist us in this case. There are also suspects who are still at large whom he is friends with.

One of them told his aunt over the phone that he wanted to turn himself in. So, we are afraid that if the accused is granted bail, he might share some of the information critical to our investigation with him as we also suspect that the other one might still have some of the exhibits,” Matibili said.

The IO also told the court that there is a witness who has emerged but is yet to be interviewed by the police. He said that the suspect could interfere with the witness if he is out on bail because he knows him.  He said that they were led to him by the first accused.

Meanwhile, Dibobo said that he should be granted bail because he could not abscond as he did not run away after the police let him go after arresting him last year. He also denied that he knew the other suspects who are still at large.

“I told the police when they arrested me last year that those people are not my friends. It is not true that I ran away because I went to Ranaka for the holidays. I have never seen those guys until I was arrested on the sixth,” he said.

The prosecution applied for all the accused except accused number six, who is out on bail, to be remanded in custody owing to completion of police investigations and the arrest of other suspects who are still at large.
