Mamelodi leaves door open on BFA presidency

Mamelodi quit his FIFA job on December 31, heightening speculation that he would stand for the BFA presidency.

Incumbent, Maclean Letshwiti has said he would only serve one term, which expires in 2020.

Mamelodi will be 62 when Letshwiti’s tenure ends. However, the former BFA chief executive officer said it was not all about the BFA presidency.

“I am a different type of leader. I believe in offering assistance where it is required. Instead of me saying I am challenging Maclean, I would rather have Maclean use me for the benefit of football. And if in the course of time, the system believes, you know what I mean... that’s why I would make a lousy politician.

I would never join a political party to be in a certain position, I would rather work and be a support structure and for that system to recognise that may be I should be approached to do something else. I think we put power too much in the front.

I believe in the past 16 years I could have done a lot for the BFA, on an individual basis and equally as head of (FIFA) development office. But I am still available, but if I start saying how do we plot the downfall.... I am not that type of a leader.

My thinking is how should I best serve Maclean. I want to be seen for what I am worth outside the presidency.

If in the fullness of time it (opportunity to be president) comes, it would be considered but it’s not automatic.”
