Trio up for nightclub murder

Otshepheng Mosweu (19), Obakeng Johannes (18) and Realeboga Mosidi from Bombadi ward in Maun allegedly murdered Mere Modisaemang by stabbing him with a sharp instrument following an altercation over a stolen cellphone.

According to facts before court, the deceased and a friend were in a car at the popular entertainment resort when the trio snatched a cellphone from the deceased’s friend who was sitting in the driver’s seat. The three accused men are said to have run from the scene after the act.

The police believe the deceased and his friend later identified the accused and a fight ensued as the two victims demanded their cellphone. In the ensuing altercation, the accused allegedly stabbed the deceased with a sharp object and he was certified dead at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital.

The trio will appear again before the Maun Magistrate Court for mention on January 24. Meanwhile, Officer Commanding police district No. 5, Peter Gochela told Mmegi that only one road fatality was recorded during the festive season.  The incident happened when a man lost his life after an Amarok double cab he was travelling in overturned along the Gweta-Francistown road.  Gochela explained that the accident involved six passengers returning from a music festival in Maun.  The officer said crime reported in Ngamiland was marginally lower than the previous festive seasons.  “We recorded four cases of rape, one of murder and five cases of house breaking-in the entire police district,” he said.

District No. 5 covers villages from Gweta to Gudigwa across the Okavango River.
