Mogoditshane police investigate teen rape

Police have identified most cases as date rape with perpetrators often being ex-lovers, casual friends or individuals that victims are familiar with and a few of which victims are attacked and raped.

A few months ago a 15-year-old girl, on her way from school, was attacked and gang raped by two men. The rapists had allegedly stopped their vehicle next to the girl and forcefully dragged her in, covered her face and took her to a house where they took turns raping her.

This Saturday yet another teenager was raped at Senthomole ward in Mogoditshane after an unknown man allegedly attacked her at the bus stop whilst she was waiting to board a taxi to Block 9, Gaborone.

Mogoditshane Police Station Commander, superintendent Russ Letsebe confirmed the incident stating to have received the report on Saturday around seven in the evening.

Letsebe said the unknown suspect who is still on the run dragged the 11-year-old girl into the nearby bush and raped her.

“The girl said she was alone home as her family had went out for a wedding and she decided to go and spend a night at her sister’s place at Block 9 location at Gaborone. Whilst waiting to board a taxi an unknown man attacked her, dragged her into the bush and raped her,” said Letsebe.

He stated that the perpetrator threatened the victim with a knife when she tried to scream out for help.

“Luckily he did not stabbed her with that knife he just threatened her with it. Investigations are ongoing to locate the suspect who is still on the run,” he said.

Letsebe has noted with great concern the escalating rape cases in his policing area despite their interventions to curb the surge.

Meanwhile Letsebe said they are also investigating a case in which a 13-year-old boy of Mogoditshane block 7 is reported missing.

“His mother said she had disciplined him last week Tuesday after suspecting he might have stolen a cell phone belonging to their landlord and since then he left home and cannot be traced. It’s been a week the teenage boy has been missing and this frightens the mother because she disclosed to have tried to locate him from his friends and relatives to no avail.

She said she even phoned their relatives at Francistown but there is no hope in locating the teenage boy,” said Letsebe stating that investigations are ongoing to locate the boy.
