Opposition leaders fill up cooperation posts

Authoritative sources said the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) president, Ndaba Gaolathe has been given the vice presidency post, while the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) president, Dumelang Saleshando will be the secretary general.

“The BCP has also been given the treasurer general position within UDC+.  The Botswana People’s Party (BPP) president, Motlatsi Molapisi has been given the chairmanship.  Although majority of things had been finished and party presidents had signed to, only ward allocations have not been finalised,” a source said.

A source said the executive committee for cooperation talks had given the parties up to end of March this year to finish ward allocations.  The source said the executive committee on December 2016 made a ruling that wards allocations should be dealt with at party structures.

“It is expected that a party, which had been given a constituency, should get 40% of wards in that area while others share 60% of the wards of the same area.  The 60% would be shared by parties, which exist in that area.

“The parties are expected to have meetings at constituency level to divide the wards fairly.  The majority of constituencies in the Northern side are dominated by BCP and a few by UDC.  The UDC has been given one constituency in Francistown and BCP two.  UDC dominates the Southern side.  But one constituency might be given to Saleshando,” the source said.

However, UDC spokesperson Moeti Mohwasa said opposition talks have not yet been finalised and therefore they are not in a stage where they can divulge anything to the press.
