Zapata was announced as Rollers coach this week after a short stint in Kenya with AFC Leopards.

However following the announcement of his move to Rollers, reports emerged that GU were seeking to block the move since ‘he had an agreement’ with them before he left to Kenya. There were reports that Moyagoleele felt Zapata still belonged to them.

However club chairperson, Boitumelo Nsunge said that is not true. He said the reports are baseless because they have a head coach in Philemon Makhwengwe.

“That is not true. We have no contract whatsoever with Zapata. All I know is that before the end of last season we did not have a head coach. Even at the beginning of this season, I did not have a head coach until we recently hired Makhwengwe. So reports of us claiming to have a contract with Zapata are not true,” Nsunge told Mmegi Sport yesterday.

He said the confusion might have been caused by the request from Rollers asking for a release letter from GU.

“Apparently one of the officials from Rollers phoned our club secretary requesting for Zapata’s release letter. And I told our secretary that Rollers cannot be making such requests through a phone call. They should make a formal request through a letter,” he said.

He added that they are happy with their appointment of Makhwengwe who is one of the most highly qualified local coaches in the country. The issue nearly spoilt what could potentially be the biggest game of the weekend tomorrow between the two sides.

Zapata left GU in the middle of last season together with several other key players with the club at the time battling financial crisis.

He joined AFC Leopards in Kenya, but only stayed for a short while before Rollers roped him in. He replaces Nikola Kavazovic who recently parted ways with the national champions. Kavazovic has since joined Leopards replacing Zapata.
