We Need To Act Fast Against Student Violence

Moral degradation amongst young people especially those who are still in school, and young people of school going age, is a big concern, which, unfortunately has been talked about several times, without any form of action.  It is not the first time that student fights have ended up in fatality. Some time in 2015 a similar tragedy occurred where two students were fighting for a memory card, which led to the death of one of the students. These two are not the only fatalities that students have suffered at the hands of other students.

The latest tragedy is said to have claimed the life of an innocent young man who was trying to break up a fight between two gangs. It is reported that he was passing by, when he witnessed a fight between two camps, and tried to apply the voice of reason by convincing fellow students to resolve their issue, amicably.

Unfortunately, his good-hearted efforts, led to the other student (s) robbing him of his bright future. Information reaching this publication from those who knew the young man, who was murdered on Friday by his fellow school mate (s), is that he was a bright student who not only maintained good grades, but was also a well-behaved young man.

It is therefore, not surprising, that the deceased felt it was his responsibility as a community member to try and break up the fight, and dissuade his fellow students from using violence. It is high time all stakeholders from all the different corners of the country come together to address the issue of moral degradation amongst students. We need to go back to the crossroads and see where we went wrong as a nation. We need to go back to the root cause of the humongous problem and how it can be contained.

We need to involve experts and find out what causes so much anger amongst our students, whether it is the environment that we as adults have created for them or whether it is external forces and how we can nip those in the butt. There are always allegations flying around that some irresponsible adults who sell drugs now target school going children; that is disgusting and should be wake up call for the nation to work together towards ensuring the safety of our children, our future leaders is secure.

There is need for a roundtable discussion by all stakeholders so that we can brainstorm on these issues. Some schools have actually even reported that there are some students who even threaten teachers, and these cannot go unabated, that is if we still desire to be a prosperous nation.  Let’s Stand Together For The Sake Of Our Future Leaders
